    One question I regularly come across in research is:

    What is the difference between research methodology and research methods?

    The two terms sound similar and are often used as if they mean the same thing.

    They do not.

    The easiest way to understand the difference is this:

    Research methodology explains the overall approach and reasoning behind your research.

    Research methods are the actual techniques you use to carry it out.

    Think About the “Why” and the “How”

    Methodology is mainly concerned with why you have chosen a particular approach.

    Methods are concerned with how you will collect or examine the information you need.

    For example, you may decide that interviews are the best way to understand people’s experiences.

    The interview is your research method.

    But why did you choose interviews? Why are they appropriate for your research question? Why did you choose them instead of a questionnaire or another method?

    Therefore, the reasoning behind those decisions forms part of your research methodology.

    A Simple Example

    Suppose your research question is:

    How do university students experience the process of writing a dissertation?

    “For example, you may decide that you need detailed information about students’ experiences.”

    A qualitative approach could therefore be appropriate.

    You might then conduct semi-structured interviews with a group of students.

    In this example:

    Qualitative research is part of your methodological approach.

    Semi-structured interviews are your research method.

    The two work together, but they are not the same thing.

    Why Does the Difference Matter?

    Understanding this difference becomes particularly important when writing a dissertation or thesis.

    It is not enough to say:

    “I used interviews.”

    An examiner may want to know why.

    Why were interviews suitable for your research question?

    What was the reason for selecting those participants?

    Was a qualitative approach the most appropriate choice?

    How did these choices help you answer your research question?

    Research is not simply about telling the reader what you did. You also need to explain the reasoning behind what you did.

    Keep It Simple

    Students sometimes make methodology unnecessarily complicated because they feel they need to use difficult academic language.

    You do not.

    If you can clearly explain what you did, how you did it and why you did it that way, you already understand an important part of research methodology.

    A simple way to remember the difference is:

    Methodology = Why this approach?

    Methods = How will I do it?

    As a result, once that distinction is clear, understanding the rest of the research process becomes much easier.

    Another question that often creates confusion for new researchers is the difference between primary and secondary research.

    The distinction is actually quite simple.

    • Primary research involves collecting new information for your own research.
    • Secondary research involves using information or evidence that already exists.

    But choosing between them depends on what you are trying to investigate.

    What Is Primary Research?

    Primary research means collecting information directly for your particular research project.

    For example, you might conduct:

    • interviews;
    • questionnaires;
    • surveys;
    • focus groups; or
    • observations.

    Suppose you want to understand how Master’s students experience the dissertation process.

    You could interview a group of students.

    Those interviews would produce new information specifically for your research.

    That is primary research.

    What Is Secondary Research?

    Secondary research uses material that is already available.

    This could include academic books, journal articles, reports, government publications, existing datasets and other published sources.

    However, there is an important point here.

    Secondary research does not mean simply reading what other researchers have written.

    You still need to analyse the material and use it systematically to answer your research question.

    In some disciplines, particularly legal research, researchers may examine legislation, court judgments, treaties, government documents and other legal materials without conducting interviews or surveys.

    A research project can therefore make an important contribution without collecting new information directly from participants.

    Is Primary Research Better?

    Students sometimes believe that primary research is automatically more valuable because they are collecting their own data.

    That is not necessarily true.

    A good secondary research project can be stronger than a poorly designed primary research project.

    The question should never be:

    Which one looks more impressive?

    The question should be:

    Which type of research will help me answer my research question?

    If the information you need already exists and can answer your question, secondary research may be appropriate.

    If you need information that does not already exist, primary research may be necessary.

    Can You Use Both?

    Yes.

    Some research projects use a combination.

    For example, you might examine existing government reports and academic studies and then conduct interviews to investigate an issue further.

    The existing material provides one source of evidence.

    The interviews provide another.

    But again, do not add primary research simply because you think you are expected to.

    Every part of your methodology should have a reason.

    Think About What Evidence You Need

    Before deciding between primary and secondary research, ask yourself:

    • What evidence do I need?
    • Does that evidence already exist?
    • Can I access it?
    • Do I need to collect new information?
    • Can I realistically complete the research within my available time and resources?

    These questions are much more useful than simply deciding that one type of research is better than another.

    Research should always follow a logical path:

    Research Question → Evidence Needed → Source of Evidence → Research Method

    The strongest research is not necessarily the research that collects the most data.

    It is the research that uses the right evidence to answer the right question.

    When students begin a dissertation or thesis, the literature review can feel like a huge reading exercise.

    Find books.

    Download journal articles.

    Read previous studies.

    Then write about what other researchers have said.

    But that is only part of it.

    A literature review is not simply a collection of summaries.

    Its real purpose is to understand what is already known about your research problem, what researchers disagree about, and what still needs to be investigated.

    You Are Not Just Showing That You Have Read

    One common mistake is to write the literature review author by author.

    Researcher A said this.

    Researcher B said that.

    Researcher C found something else.

    This may show that you have read the literature, but it does not necessarily show that you have analysed it.

    A good literature review brings different sources into a discussion.

    • Where do researchers agree?
    • Where do they disagree?
    • Are there different explanations for the same problem?
    • Has something important been overlooked?

    These questions move you from simply describing the literature towards critically examining it.

    What Are You Looking For?

    When reading literature, do not read without a purpose.

    Keep your research problem and research questions in mind.

    You are looking for information that helps you understand your subject.

    For example, you might identify:

    • important theories or concepts;
    • major debates;
    • different approaches to the problem;
    • weaknesses in previous research;
    • contradictions between studies; or
    • areas that have received little attention.

    These can help you understand where your own research fits.

    What Is a Research Gap?

    Students often hear that their literature review must identify a research gap.

    This sometimes creates unnecessary pressure.

    A research gap does not always mean discovering something that nobody in the world has ever considered before.

    The gap may be smaller.

    • Perhaps an existing issue has not been examined in a particular country.
    • Perhaps legislation has changed.
    • Perhaps previous researchers reached conflicting conclusions.
    • Perhaps an established problem needs to be examined from a different perspective.

    The important question is:

    What can my research add to the existing discussion?

    Be Critical, Not Negative

    Critical analysis does not mean criticising every author you read.

    It means examining the literature carefully.

    Ask:

    • What is the author’s argument?
    • What evidence supports it?
    • Are there limitations?
    • Does another researcher reach a different conclusion?
    • How does this source relate to my research problem?

    This is where the literature review becomes analytical rather than descriptive.

    Your Literature Review Has a Job

    Every part of a research project should have a purpose.

    The literature review helps establish what is already known and creates the foundation for what your research will investigate.

    A simple way to remember its role is:

    What do we already know? → What is being debated? → What is missing? → Where does my research fit?

    Once you begin thinking this way, the literature review stops being simply a long list of books and journal articles.

    It becomes part of your research argument.

    And that is what a good literature review is really for.

    One of the first decisions many researchers face is choosing between qualitative vs quantitative research.

    Students sometimes ask:

    Which one is better?

    The answer is simple.

    Neither is automatically better.

    The right choice depends on what you are trying to find out.

    What Is Qualitative Research?

    Qualitative research is generally used when you want to understand people’s experiences, opinions, behaviour or the meaning behind a particular issue.

    For example, imagine you want to understand how university students experience academic pressure.

    Numbers alone may not tell you the whole story.

    You may need to speak to students and understand their experiences in their own words.

    Interviews, focus groups, observations and document analysis are commonly associated with qualitative research.

    The emphasis is usually on understanding and interpretation.

    What Is Quantitative Research?

    Quantitative research is mainly concerned with numbers, measurement and patterns.

    Suppose you want to know how many university students experience academic pressure or whether particular factors are associated with higher levels of pressure.

    You may collect numerical data through questionnaires, surveys, experiments or existing datasets.

    You can then use statistical analysis to identify patterns or relationships.

    In simple terms:

    Qualitative research often asks: Why? How? What does this mean?

    Quantitative research often asks: How many? How much? Is there a measurable relationship?

    Which One Should You Choose?

    Do not choose qualitative research simply because you dislike statistics.

    And do not choose quantitative research because you think numbers make research look more scientific.

    Start with your research question.

    Ask yourself what type of information you need to answer it.

    If you need detailed experiences, explanations or interpretations, a qualitative approach may be appropriate.

    If you need numerical measurements, comparisons or statistical relationships, quantitative research may be more suitable.

    What About Mixed Methods?

    Sometimes one approach is not enough.

    A researcher may want numerical information but also want to understand the reasons behind those numbers.

    This is where mixed-methods research can be useful.

    For example, you might conduct a survey to identify a pattern and then use interviews to understand why that pattern exists.

    This allows quantitative and qualitative evidence to contribute to the same research project.

    But using two approaches does not automatically make the research better.

    It also means more work.

    Each method should have a clear purpose.

    Follow the Question

    This is the point worth remembering.

    Your methodology should not be chosen because it sounds impressive or because another researcher used it.

    It should be chosen because it helps you answer your research question.

    The process should remain logical:

    Research Problem → Research Question → Type of Evidence Needed → Methodology → Methods

    When you understand what you are trying to discover, the choice between qualitative and quantitative research becomes much easier.

    Do not start by asking, “Which methodology should I use?”

    Start by asking:

    “What information do I need to answer my research question?”

    The answer will often point you towards the right approach.

    What is research design? When students first hear the term, they sometimes think it means the layout or presentation of their research

    Research design is simply the overall plan for how you are going to conduct your research.

    Think about building a house.

    Before construction begins, you need a plan. You need to know what you are building, how it will be built and what will be needed.

    Research works in a similar way.

    Before collecting information or analysing evidence, you need a clear plan for how the research will answer your research question.

    Where Does Research Design Begin?

    Research design should not be the first decision you make.

    Start with your research problem.

    Then develop your research question.

    Once you know what you are trying to investigate, you can decide what type of research design is appropriate.

    For example, are you trying to describe a situation?

    Are you exploring something that is not well understood?

    Or are you trying to explain why something happens?

    The answer can help determine your research design.

    Three Common Research Designs

    There are many ways of designing research, but three terms appear regularly:

    • Exploratory,
    • Descriptive and
    • Explanatory research.

    Exploratory Research

    Exploratory research is useful when you want to investigate a problem or issue that is not yet clearly understood.

    The purpose is often to explore the subject and develop a better understanding of what is happening.

    Descriptive Research

    Descriptive research focuses on describing a situation, group, event or phenomenon.

    It asks questions such as:

    • What is happening?
    • What are the main characteristics?
    • What patterns can be identified?

    The researcher is trying to develop a clearer picture of the subject being studied.

    Explanatory Research

    Explanatory research goes further.

    It is concerned with understanding why something happens or how different factors may be connected.

    Instead of simply describing a problem, the researcher attempts to explain it.

    Can You Use More Than One?

    Yes.

    A research project does not always fit neatly into one box.

    Your research may begin by describing a problem, explore particular aspects of it and then attempt to explain why the problem exists.

    The important issue is not how many labels you use.

    The important issue is whether you can justify your research design and explain how it helps answer your research question.

    What Is Research Design and Why Does It Matter?

    Without a clear research design, a project can easily lose direction.

    You may collect information that does not answer your question.

    You may choose methods that do not fit your research problem.

    Or you may reach the end of the project and realise that different parts of the research do not connect properly.

    A good research design helps keep everything connected:

    Research Problem → Research Question → Research Design → Research Methodology → Methods → Analysis

    This connection is more important than memorising complicated definitions.

    When thinking about research design, start with a simple question:

    What am I trying to investigate, and what type of research plan will help me investigate it properly?

    If you can answer that clearly, you are already beginning to understand research design.

    Learning how to choose a good research topic sounds easy.

    In reality, it can be one of the most difficult decisions at the beginning of a dissertation or research project.

    Students often start with a very broad idea.

    • “I want to research corruption.”
    • “I want to research artificial intelligence.”
    • “I want to research corporate governance.”

    These are areas of interest, but they are not yet research topics.

    A good research topic needs to be more focused.

    How to Choose a Good Research Topic: Start With Your Interests

    Research takes time.

    For a Master’s dissertation, you may spend several months working on the same subject. For a PhD, you may spend several years.

    So, choose something that genuinely interests you.

    Ask yourself:

    What subject do I keep coming back to?

    What problem within that subject interests me?

    Is there something I want to understand better?

    Interest alone, however, is not enough.

    Your topic must also be researchable.

    How to Choose a Good Research Topic: Move From a Subject to a Problem

    This is where many students struggle.

    They choose a subject instead of identifying a problem.

    For example:

    Corruption in the UK

    This is far too broad.

    You could narrow it by asking what specifically about corruption you want to investigate.

    • Is your interest in legislation?
    • Enforcement?
    • Government policy?
    • Corporate behaviour?
    • Definitions of corruption?

    Once you begin asking these questions, a broad subject starts becoming a researchable topic.

    Check Whether the Research Is Possible

    A topic may sound excellent but still be difficult to research.

    Before making your final decision, consider some practical questions.

    • Can you access the information you need?
    • Is there enough academic literature?
    • Can the research be completed within your available time?
    • Do you need participants?
    • Will you need ethical approval?
    • Is the topic too broad for the number of words available?

    These questions can save a great deal of difficulty later.

    You can also use Google Scholar to explore academic literature and identify research already published in your subject area.

    You do not need to read everything before choosing your topic.

    But you should read enough to understand what researchers are already discussing.

    Look at journal articles, books, reports and recent studies.

    • What questions have already been answered?
    • Where do researchers disagree?
    • What problems remain?

    Sometimes the best research topic appears while you are reading about something else.

    You notice a gap, an unanswered question or an issue that deserves further investigation.

    That can become the starting point of your research.

    Keep Narrowing It Down

    Learning how to choose a good research topic is therefore a process of gradually narrowing your ideas.

    Broad Subject → Area of Interest → Specific Problem → Research Topic

    Do not worry if your first topic changes.

    Understanding research methodology can also help you see how your topic connects with the wider research process.

    What matters is reaching a point where you can clearly explain:

    • What am I researching?
    • Why is it worth researching?
    • Can I realistically research it?

    If you can answer those three questions clearly, you are moving towards a good research topic.

    When I started research, one thing became clear very quickly: research methodology sounds much more complicated than it actually is.

    Students often hear words such as methodology, methods, research design, qualitative research and quantitative research. When all these terms come together, research can suddenly look difficult.

    But the basic idea of research methodology is quite simple.

    Research methodology explains how you are going to conduct your research and why you have chosen that particular way of doing it.

    Suppose you have identified a research problem. You then develop your research questions and decide what you want to investigate. The next question is: How am I going to find the answer?

    That is where research methodology comes in.

    Why Research Methodology Is More Than Choosing a Method

    A common mistake is to think that research methodology simply means choosing interviews, questionnaires, surveys or secondary sources.

    These are research methods or tools.

    Methodology goes further.

    It explains the thinking behind those choices. Why are interviews appropriate for your research? Why have you chosen qualitative rather than quantitative research? Why are you analysing existing documents instead of collecting information directly from participants?

    A researcher should be able to explain these decisions.

    Start With the Research Question

    One lesson I have learned through research is that you should not choose your methodology first.

    Start with the problem.

    Then develop the research question.

    After that, think about the best way of answering it.

    For example, if you want to understand people’s experiences, interviews may be appropriate. If you want to measure something across a large group, a survey may be more suitable. If your research examines laws, court decisions or legal principles, you may use doctrinal legal research.

    Different questions require different approaches.

    There is no single methodology that is right for every research project.

    Why Does Methodology Matter?

    Your methodology gives your research a structure?

    It shows the reader — and eventually your examiner — that your conclusions did not simply come from your personal opinion.

    There was a process behind them.

    You identified a problem, developed questions, selected an appropriate approach, examined the evidence and reached conclusions.

    That logical connection is important in any serious research.

    A simple way of remembering it is:

    Research Problem → Research Question → Methodology → Methods → Analysis → Findings

    If you understand this connection, research methodology becomes much easier to understand.

    You do not need to begin by memorising dozens of academic terms.

    Begin with one question:

    What am I trying to find out, and what is the best way to find it out?

    That is the starting point of research methodology.
